Coventry Music exhibition: November
2009 - January 2010
This exhibition will cover the history of the popular music scene in Coventry
from the 1950s to the present day. It aims to celebrate the Coventry bands
of those years and inspire the next generation of musicians in the city. Familiar
names featured will range from Frank Ifield and Vince Hill in the early days
of rock and roll, through the Two Tone bands like the Specials and the Selecter,
to the city's latest pop successes, the Enemy. The exhibition will also feature
the venues, such as the Locarno and the Lanch, where top bands like the Beatles
and Sex Pistols played in their heyday. It will also focus on the fans who bought
the records, wore the clothes and collected the memorabilia. The exhibition will
include music, film and interviews with band members and fans, and there will
be a chance to see instruments, clothing and gold disks loaned by some of the
stars.
New Art from South Asia: 24 January - 19 April
2009
This exhibition is an opportunity for emerging artists in South Asia
to show their work for the first time in the UK. New Art from
South Asia is curated by Gerard Mermoz in collaboration with The Herbert. Memoz
is an artist-curator whose concept for the exhibition was inspired
by his recent experiences of teaching at Srishti College (2006), from
undertaking an artist residency at Kashi Art Gallery in Kochin, and from
sitting on the jury of the KAVA Art Prize (2007) organised by Kashi
Art Gallery. The exhibition will gather together a coherent body
of work which will offer insightful perspectives about living and being
an artist in the 21st century and coming to terms with traditions, values,
beliefs, tensions and aspirations.
