Contemporary Photography from the V&amp;A</p> <p>Richard Billingham&rsquo;s frank photographs of his family, which are still provoking debate nearly 15 years later, will be among a touring exhibition from the Victoria and Albert Museum in London coming to Coventry.</p> <p>The photographer, who grew up in Cradley Heath in Birmingham, was a student when he captured his mother, Liz, father, Ray, and brother, Jason, in a series of shots which he processed at a local chemist.</p> <p>The emotions captured within the family home shot Richard to national fame when the images were included in exhibitions and a book called Ray&rsquo;s a Laugh.</p> <p>His 1994 photograph of his mother, who died three years ago, putting together a jigsaw is part of the Something That I&rsquo;ll Never Really See Contemporary Photography from the V&amp;A which will run at The Herbert in Jordan Well in Coventry city centre from September 16, 2008 until January 11, 2009.</p> <p>Richard said: &ldquo;I took most of the photos on an instamatic camera and there was nothing complicated about it.<br />&ldquo;It is nearly 15 years now since I took these photos. When people look at them now, they still have the same potency even after all this time.</p> <p>&ldquo;I held the camera above my mum&rsquo;s head while she was doing the jigsaw. I&rsquo;m not even sure if I looked through the view finder.</p> <p>&ldquo;I think it is a great portrait of her. You can&rsquo;t see her face and I suppose if you take a portrait of somebody, you should see their face but in this instance you can&rsquo;t.<br />&ldquo;She is pretty engrossed in the jigsaw and although you can&rsquo;t see her face, you can get a good sense of what she&rsquo;s about.</p> <p>&ldquo;My mum loved doing jigsaws and that is what she did the most of. When she died, I had to sort the flat out and there was over 100 jigsaws in a cupboard. I threw them away &ndash; the pieces filled three black bin bags &ndash; apart from a couple which I kept.&rdquo;</p> <p>The dad-of-two, who now lives in Wales with his partner and their two children, Walter, aged two, and Ramona, aged two months, said he had wanted to be a painter originally.</p> <p>&ldquo;I have given up trying to be a painter &ndash; photography is easier because you just press a button!&rdquo; Richard added.<br />Around 40 contemporary photographs in Something That I'll Never Really See are drawn from the V&amp;A&rsquo;s permanent collections and include some of the most innovative works created during a pivotal period in photographic history</p> text/html 2010-01-07T15:59:42+00:00 http://www.theherbert.org/ The Herbert http://www.theherbert.org/index.php/home/vanda-exhibition-launches <h4>24 September 2008 </h4><p>An internationally renowned exhibition of contemporary photographs from the world famous Victoria and Albert Museum has opened in Coventry.<br /><br />Something That I&rsquo;ll Never Really See is organised by the V&amp;A and features over 30 artists as well as new talents in a selection of 44 photographs.<br /><br />Ludo Keston, chief executive of the Herbert Art Gallery and Museum, introduced guests to the exhibition at the city centre venue in Jordan Well, which will run until January 11, 2009.<br /><br />The photographs in Something That I'll Never Really See are drawn from the V&amp;A&rsquo;s permanent collections and include some of the most innovative works created during a pivotal period in photographic history.<br /><br />Dominic Bubb, exhibitions officer at the Herbert Art Gallery and Museum, said: "Something That I&rsquo;ll Never Really See offers an exciting range of material which is thought provoking and innovative.<br /><br />"It draws together a diverse range of contemporary photographs that the V&amp;A has collected during the last ten years and held in its permanent collection.<br /><br />"Our new galleries are ideal to host exhibitions such as this and we have every faith that they will attract strong interest from our visitors."<br /><br />A mini exhibition by three local community groups will also take place alongside Something That I&rsquo;ll Never Really See.<br /><br />The Grapevine drop-in centre for people with learning difficulties is the first of the groups to create photographs of their own communities, and will be followed by Cardinal Wiseman School in November and the School of Art and Design at the University of Wolverhampton in December.<br /><br />Something That I&rsquo;ll Never Really See will be at Gallery One of The Herbert until January 11, 2009 and admission is free.</p> text/html 2010-01-07T15:59:42+00:00 http://www.theherbert.org/ The Herbert http://www.theherbert.org/index.php/home/final-chapter-of-the-apu-trilogy-to-be-screened <h4>26 September 2008</h4><p>The final chapter in one of the greatest film trilogy&rsquo;s ever made will be screened at the Herbert this October.<br /><br />The World of Apu is the last instalment in The Apu Trilogy by acclaimed director Satyajit Ray.<br /><br />The 100-minute film will be shown in The Studio at the Herbert Art Gallery and Museum in Jordan Well in Coventry city centre on Sunday, October 12, at 1pm.<br /><br />This award-winning 1958 tragic love story focuses on the death of Apu&rsquo;s wife, Aparna, as she gives birth to their son, Kajal.<br /><br />Devastated, Apu abandons his son in Calcutta with his wife&rsquo;s parents for a nomadic lifestyle but in the final scenes, he returns to accept his responsibilities in an unforgettable ending.<br /><br />Stacey Bains, Cultural Diversity Officer at the Herbert Art Gallery and Museum, said the previous two films in the trilogy had proved to be extremely popular.<br /><br />&ldquo;This was considered to be Satyajit&rsquo;s finest hour as a director,&rdquo; she said. &ldquo;The series chronicles the life of Bengali boy Apu and his joy and despair as he grows up into an adult and the challenges that he faces.<br /><br />&ldquo;The final scenes in this third film are regarded by film critics as among the most uplifting and life-affirming in cinema history.<br /><br />&ldquo;It you have missed the first two instalments then don&rsquo;t worry because this is a self-contained movie and it won&rsquo;t affect your understanding or spoil your enjoyment.<br /><br />&ldquo;This is a beautiful film and if anyone hasn&rsquo;t seen any of Satyajit&rsquo;s work I would strongly recommend that they come along to see this unforgettable and emotional piece of work.&rdquo;<br /><br />This is a free event but seats are limited so guests are invited to arrive early.
