Cherry Martin chose….

Roman objects from the Lunt Roman Fort, Baginton

I have always had an interest in Romans since dressing up for our Roman Day at primary school! I think the wealth of archaeological evidence the Romans left us is fascinating. Unlike Coventry, it was thought until recently that there was no Roman activity beyond Devon. However one of my university lecturers excavated a Roman silver mine over the Cornish border. In June 2009 traces of occupation and surveys revealed a possible Roman fort in mid Cornwall. This has made me wonder how much local and national history we will have to re-write! I would love to know what they were doing in Cornwall, fighting off us local Cornish, looking for precious metals or maybe just popping down for a holiday, some cider and an ice cream!

Cherry Martin was a Positive Action Trainee and worked on this project until she finished in April this year.

What the curator says:

Roman objects from the Lunt Roman Fort, Baginton

1. Handle for a knife or from a piece of furniture

2. Horse harness strap fitting

3. Binding from the edges of legionary shields

4. A hook clasp from a horse harness

5. A rivet from a leather strap

These are all archaeological objects excavated from the Lunt Roman Fort during the 1970s. The Fort was in use from around AD 60 to 80. It has a unique circular structure called a gyrus which was used for cavalry training. The Fort is open weekends and bank holidays throughout the summer. It has been partially reconstructed so visitors can discover what it is like to be a Roman soldier, climb the gateway and explore the site.
