This wax headed doll is dressed in the contemporary Blue Coat School uniform, circa 1870. It has blue paperweight eyes, blond mohair wig, four teeth in an open mouth, china lower arms and legs and a cloth stuffed body.
The outer clothes are original. The doll's clothes with its navy blue dress and white apron were the same as the school's uniform at the time.
The doll's clothes were hand made by Blue Coat girls to raise money for the school. Blue Coat School was established in 1714 as a charity school for girls, close to Holy Trinity Church in the centre of the City. The pupils were a familiar sight to Coventrians in their distinctive uniform of dark blue dresses and capes with white caps and yellow mittens - missing on the doll.
The doll was dressed by girls of the School for a bazaar and purchased by the late Mr Cryer who owned a ribbon and shroud factory in Coventry. It is at least 100 years old.
