What the curator says:

Rhinoceros Beetles (Dynastinae)

The beetles on the left side of this draw are all commonly called rhinoceros beetles. They are a sub-family of the scarab beetle and are amongst the largest beetles in the world. Their name comes from the horns on the male beetle. In Asia they are popular pets and people gamble on which beetle will knock the other off a log.

The largest specimen you can see here is called a hercules beetle (Dynastes tityus). This species lives in rainforests of south and central America. It is said to be the strongest beetle on earth for its size and can carry 850 times its own body weight. The larval stage can last for several years, eating rotting wood. The adult beetle eats fruit.
