Incendiary bomb, 1940
It’s difficult to believe that something looking like a small space rocket could create such destruction. One of the positives to emerge though from this dreadful time were new friendships. It was the friendship of women of Coventry and Volgograd [formerly Stalingrad] that emerged during the war that helped to develop the first Twin City link over 65 years ago and here I am 65 years later forging my own friendships there as I work on cultural projects with my Russian friends and colleagues.

What the curator says:
Incendiary bomb, 1940
Incendiary bombs were widely used by both sides during the Second World War to start fires and cause maximum damage to target areas. This bomb fell on the Armstrong Siddeley works during the Coventry Blitz of 14th November 1940. Coventry's factories were under attack, but other buildings, such as the Cathedral and many houses were hit. The Armstrong Siddeley works was targeted by German bombers because it was making aero engines for the British war effort.
