Making a booking
All Active Learning Sessions and independent visits must be booked in advance, in order to ensure that the museum does not become overcrowded.
Step 1: Decide what you would like to book for
Step 2: Call the booking line with some possible dates for your visit
Step 3: If we are unable to answer your call, you can leave a message on our answer phone. Please leave your name, school, contact number and/or email address and we will get back to you as soon as possible
Step 4: After we have made contact and discussed your visit, you will recieve a booking form. Please ensure that you check, complete and return it to guarantee your visit
Step 5: Please download the appropriate Teacher's Resource Pack, if required
Step 6: If possible come to The Herbert for a pre-visit to meet with one of our Learning Officers to discuss your visit
Step 7: If you have booked an Active Learning Session your school will be invoiced after your group visit
Group size: Our Active Learning Sessions are designed for a class of up to 32 at a time. The museum can accomodate large groups in the building at one time when booked in advance. For school groups of more than 32 multiple sessions must be booked.
Health and safety: A general gallery risk assessment is available to download from this page. This is for your guidance only and will help you in preparing your own risk assessment. We welcome pre-visits from teachers, to make sure that we can meet your schools specific needs and requirements. Please email learning@theherbert.org for further information.
1. Does The Herbert loan its objects to schools? No, but our Outreach Officer can visit you in your classroom with a range of different objects. See the section on Outreach for further information.
2. Where can we park? School coaches and minibuses can drop off pupils at the side of the museum in Bayley Lane but no parking is available on site.
3. Does The Herbert learning team offer bespoke sessions? No, we do not offer bespoke sessions but if you have any specific needs or requirements please contact us directly.
4. Are the learning sessions adaptable for different age groups and abilities? Our learning sessions are designed for specific key stages, but our team of learning officers are able to adapt them for different age groups and abilities. Please contact us directly to discuss your needs.
5. How much does it cost to bring a school group?
Our independent visits remain free of charge. This includes general visits to the museum galleries and also our specially developed independent visit resources.
Our Active Learning Sessions, led by a Learning Officer, are charged at £70 per session (£60 for Coventry local authority schools).
For groups smaller than 15 pupils Active learning sessions are charged at £40 per session (£35 for Coventry local authority schools).
Our Outreach learning sessions, led by a Learning Officer, are charged at £75 per session. For groups smaller than 15 pupils outreach sessions are charged at £45 per session.
Maximum number of pupils per session is 32.
6. Why do you charge? As an independent charity, in line with other museums in Coventry and across the West Midlands, we need to offset our costs in order that we can continue to offer opportunities for all and bring history and the arts to life for future generations.
7. Are there lunch facilities? Lunch spaces can be available, please specify at time of booking. Booking a lunch space is currently free of charge.
