Practical Information

Everything you need to know to make your trip easy

Arrival: Please ask your pupils to wait in the Covered Court - the newly extended area of the museum, opposite Coventry Cathedral, whilst a member of your school staff reports to reception.

Please note that although we appreciate your prompt arrival for your session, the The Herbert does not open until 10am.

Toilets: We recommend that school groups use our larger first floor, public toilets as each toilet cubicle has its own sink and hand dryer. There are toilets specifically for schools using Learning Space 3. There are also additional public toilets on the ground floor opposite Learning Space 1.

Lunch facilities: Indoor lunch spaces are available, free of charge. Please let us know at the time of booking if you require a lunch space. Please help us to keep these lunch spaces clean and tidy by putting all rubbish in the bins provided, as this allows us to continue to offer these facilities free of charge.

Coats and bags: We have a limitied number of coats racks available for school groups to use during their visit. We recommend visitors keep valuables with them at all times.

Fire alarm: In the event of a fire, an alarm will sound and the museum will be evacuated. Please follow the guidance of museum staff towards emergency exits.

Coach/mini bus/ car parking: School coaches and minibuses can drop off pupils at the side of the museum in Bayley Lane but no parking is available on site.

Learning spaces: There are three designated Learning Spaces for use by school groups, one of which has integrated toilet facilities. If you have booked an Active Learning Session this will be booked into the most appropriate space for the activity.

Accessibility: The museum galleries and learning spaces are full accessible to all.

Shop: Our gift shop has a wide variety of items on sale. Please let us know in advance if your school group are intending to use the shop.

Extending your visit: To extend your visit we have 9 permanent galleries to explore with your pupils. Alternatively your school group can visit the Priory Visitor Centre, Coventry Transport Museum and Coventry Cathedral, which are all in walking distance from the Herbert.

Behaviour: The museum is a shared public area that is used by many different people. In order to respect the needs of all our visitors and maintain a safe and pleasant environment for everyone please ensure that the following points are adhered to:

  • Discipline is the responsibility of the group leader and their helpers, who should remain with the group at all times. Your LEA guidelines for pupil/adult ratios should be followed.
  • Mobile phones should be switched to silent during active learning sessions to avoid distraction.
  • Please treat handling resources with care at all times and ensure that any damage is reported immediately.
  • Food and drink should not be consumed in the galleries, however a designated lunch area can be booked if available.
