A Day in the Life of...

Maureen Lapsa at the Lunt Roman Fort
Maureen Lapsa at the Lunt Roman Fort

Maureen Lapsa, Guide/Attendant (Lunt Roman Fort, part of Coventry Heritage and Arts Trust)

6.00

My Husband is always up before me, so he wakes me up with a cup of tea.

6.30

Get up.  Do some household chores.  Feed the dog, the cat, the   birds, and the fish.  Walk the dog, and then have some breakfast.

8.30

Off to work.  Rob, Ian and I work on a rota basis, and today I’m working with Ian. Between us we open up the Fort and the Granary/Museum. We check that everywhere is clean and tidy, and that the resident fox hasn’t left the remains of his supper in the horse training Gyrus for the children to see.

9.45

Today is Friday and we are expecting 30 children from a local Primary School. Roman history is part of the National Curriculum, and has an important part in our national heritage. We play an important part in passing on this information. All the exhibits are ready and in place, so there is just time for a quick cup of tea while looking out over the Fort at the wild flowers and baby rabbits.

10.00

The children arrive. They will have an outside tour and an inside talk.  Today I’m doing the talk inside. Ian takes the children outside, and explains the history, the surroundings and importance of the Fort. While Ian is doing this, I start to get the afternoon activities organised.

11.00

Ian brings the children back into Granary building. I tell them about the armour, clothes and weapons that the soldiers had, and all about their daily life at the Lunt. One lucky child gets to dress up as a Roman soldier, while another is dressed as a Celt.

12.00

While the children are having their lunch we get the swords and shields ready for this afternoon.

12.30

Back to work.  The children are doing a battle drill.  This is normally done by Rob or Ian, but I do get to be the Standard Bearer, leading the children into the Gyrus, where they will make their oath of allegiance to the Emperor before doing their military exercises.

1.15

Now back inside, the children are doing a 'Max Mole' trail to strengthen their understanding of what they have learned. They will find things in the models at the Museum and tick them off their worksheets, and complete some drawings of the Fort.

2.00

The children spend their pocket money in the shop, buying anything from swords and jewellery to coins and pencils.

2.30

We wave goodbye to the children and have another well deserved cup of tea before re-arranging the furniture and getting some artefacts ready for the weekend when we are open to the public.  This weekend I will be working with Rob. Maybe there will be families visiting or students and maybe people from abroad on holiday. Again, we will be able to pass on our knowledge. But like the schools, everyone will be different, and every day is different, which is why I love my job.

3.15

Time to lock up, go home and take the dog for another walk before getting dinner ready for the Family.
