Coming Soon - Secret Egypt

Herbert staff members Chris Kirby and Ali Wells are leading on a major temporary exhibition about ancient Egypt which will be at the Herbert from February to June 2011.

We hope to include objects from some of the UK's most important collections such as the British Museum, the Manchester Museum and the Ashmolean although the majority of items will come from Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery. The loans include statuary, coffins, stelae, ceramics, jewellery and a mummy.

The exhibition examines popular modern ideas about the ancient Egyptians - and uses objects to suggest the truth might be otherwise.  The exhibition will address such questions such as; is there a mummy's curse? Were the Egyptians obsessed with death and did aliens build the pyramids?

Staff from across the Herbert are involved with the exhibition, including the Learning Team, Marketing Team, Inclusion Team, Curatorial Team and Conservation
