The shortlisting recognises the contribution that our adult learning work is making to community life in the city. Staff from the Herbert's Learning and Inclusion team have recently finished a project to create gallery based literacy resources for tutors and learners.

The project was a partnership with Coventry City Council's Adult Education Service and the Herbert team worked closely with experienced tutors for English and ESOL (English for Speakers of other Languages).

 Previous work with adult essential skills tutors suggested that the Herbert could be a valuable resource for their learners, and could help to develop a sense of civic pride and belonging among people from newer communities.

The working party has created a wealth of material based on historical topics such as Lady Godiva, the Second World War and Coventry industry. Online resources provide tutors with advice on getting the most from their museum visit, and background information about key museum exhibits. The curriculum based activities in the museum are tailored to the needs of literacy learners at different levels and designed for independent use by visiting classes.

We hope that many groups will benefit from using the new resources, and that more people will come to see the Herbert as an inspiring and welcoming place for the whole community.
