The final chapter in one of the greatest film trilogy’s ever made will be screened at the Herbert this October.

The World of Apu is the last instalment in The Apu Trilogy by acclaimed director Satyajit Ray.

The 100-minute film will be shown in The Studio at the Herbert Art Gallery and Museum in Jordan Well in Coventry city centre on Sunday, October 12, at 1pm.

This award-winning 1958 tragic love story focuses on the death of Apu’s wife, Aparna, as she gives birth to their son, Kajal.

Devastated, Apu abandons his son in Calcutta with his wife’s parents for a nomadic lifestyle but in the final scenes, he returns to accept his responsibilities in an unforgettable ending.

Stacey Bains, Cultural Diversity Officer at the Herbert Art Gallery and Museum, said the previous two films in the trilogy had proved to be extremely popular.

“This was considered to be Satyajit’s finest hour as a director,” she said. “The series chronicles the life of Bengali boy Apu and his joy and despair as he grows up into an adult and the challenges that he faces.

“The final scenes in this third film are regarded by film critics as among the most uplifting and life-affirming in cinema history.

“It you have missed the first two instalments then don’t worry because this is a self-contained movie and it won’t affect your understanding or spoil your enjoyment.

“This is a beautiful film and if anyone hasn’t seen any of Satyajit’s work I would strongly recommend that they come along to see this unforgettable and emotional piece of work.”

This is a free event but seats are limited so guests are invited to arrive early. The Bengali film with English sub-titles is suitable for all.
