Flog it! films in Coventry

06 November 2008

The Herbert's Discover Godiva Gallery lived up to its name for the BBC 2 Flog it! film crew.

The crew has been in Coventry filming for the antiques and collectables programme as part of the seventh series.

Included in the programme will be a feature on Coventry's history, and the BBC spent the afternoon at The Herbert Art Gallery and Museum in Jordan Well, filming for the feature.

Paul Martin, presenter of the BBC 2 programme, interviewed Councillor Roger Bailey and Coventry's modern-day Godiva, Pru Porretta, for an insight into the history behind Coventry's iconic Lady Godiva.

The filming took place in the Discover Godiva Gallery and the Herbert's new History Centre which holds archives of the city dating back to mediaeval times.

Both the Godiva Gallery and the History Centre are part of the £20 million refurbishment and extension of The Herbert, which was revealed to the public when it re-opened in October.

It wasn't the first time the TV crew had been to the city for this programme - Coventrians took their family treasures and antiques along to Coventry Cathedral where the Flog it! film crew held a valuation day, ahead of the auction.

Items which were found to be of substantial value were then put forward to the auction which was held in Stratford at Bigwoods Autioneers on October, 31.

Chris Kirby, of The Herbert Art Gallery and Museum, said: "Paul Martin from Flog It! was most complementary about the new galleries and it was great to be able to show off the new Herbert building for this BBC programme.

"Lady Godiva is always of interest to people, and she plays a huge part in the history of Coventry.

"The public can learn more about the story behind Godiva at our new Discover Godiva Gallery which has already become a favourite with many of our visitors.

"Our new History Centre can help people look into the past of Coventry and trace their descendents, and who knows what hidden family secrets they could find!"

The Coventry Flog it! programme will be aired in early 2009 on BBC 2.
