But wins the hearts of Coventry People

Local artist George Shaw lost out to Martin Boyce for this year's Turner Prize 2011 but won the heart of his home town Coventry.

Over 200 people attended a special celebration at the Herbert Art Gallery & Museum on Monday 5 December to support Shaw and his bid to win the most prestigious prize for Art.

Before watching the live coverage on Channel 4 visitors enjoyed live music, the film premiere of Herbert Media's documentary about George Shaw I woz ere and a couple of helpings of Pecha Kucha.

A live link to the action at Baltic was screened in the Covered Court but Shaw lost out to sculptor Martin Boyce.

Shaw said that if he hadn't made these paintings of the Tile Hill estate, they'd only be a few people who had ever heard of it along with the odd picture in a book somewhere. Even though he's not won the Turner Prize, the whole world will see the estate and that's something to be proud of.
