Getting Involved

Herbert Media leads vocational training for young people

At a time when youth unemployment has hit one million the Herbert has taken a trailblazing sector lead and committed itself to vocational training for young people at risk through projects such as Getting Involved

Since its launch in August 2011 the programme has so far provided formal accredited foundation learning to over forty young people at risk of exclusion, with impressive student retention and pass rate of 90%.

It involves performing digital media activities such as video production, podcasting, radio advertising, photography and blogging. These are themed and inspired by the Herbert's collections and underpinned by invaluable functional skills such as team working, communication and enterprise. This includes the launch of the photography book Soundtrack of Our Lives which was inspired by the urban landscapes of George Shaw.

Young participants have included those in the care system, young carers and students with learning difficulties.

National Open College Network's external verification report praised the Herbert's:

  • Outstanding up to date facilities
  • Excellent portfolios of evidence
  • Good range of activities available for learners to gain experience and skills
  • Good persona; tutor feedback from learners

The success of Getting Involved has led to a long term youth training contract engagement, inclusion in two EU bid consortiums, invites to tender and offers of partnership.
