Herbert inspires young people to participate

The Herbert's Inclusion team has been hard at work creating exciting projects to encourage local people from diverse backgrounds to get involved.

Over the last few months the team's  work continued with two projects linked to the fantastic Street Art exhibition, which gave disadvantaged young people the opportunity to work with practising street artists to produce their own work and develop skills in event management.

Planning is underway for a project with disengaged young people, funded through a grant from the Esmee Fairbairn Foundation. The project aims to improve their life skills and creative and technical skills through accredited media training and creative workshops based around the Herbert's temporary exhibition programme.

The team also worked in partnership with Hereward College and Wolverhampton Arts and Heritage Service to display Unlocked, an exhibition of creative work by young people with disabilities.

The Inclusion Team delivered further taster sessions for adult literacy and mental health groups, and for adult learners from priority neighbourhoods as well as creating gallery-based resources for adult essential skills literacy learners.

Alison Taylor, Senior Inclusion and Diversity Officer, commented 'Over the last two years we have delivered a large number of groundbreaking projects benefiting the local community in terms of learning, participation, representation and building a sense of belonging. We now have greatly increased numbers of attendees from diverse backgrounds, many of whom do not traditionally visit museums but have started to come to the Herbert regularly. Our planned projects for next year build on this vital work with continued funding from the Museums Libraries and Archives Council and newly awarded funds from generous organisations like the Esmee Fairbairn Foundation. As well as the new range of projects concentrating on young people, our team continues to work to ensure that there is something for everyone at the Herbert.'
