The Herbert has an outstanding record for engaging excluded communities and ensuring local community groups are at the heart of our work. One of the many roles of the Herbert's inclusion officers is to support local community groups in developing their own exhibitions and events for the venue. The latest display in the community space within the Elements gallery is from the Artyfolks group, which involves people with mental health issues in creative activities.
A larger exhibition which recently opened in the Studio space features the work of refugees and other new migrants to Coventry. Through artwork from individuals it explores Coventry's identity as a nationally designated City of Sanctuary and enables local people to see the city through the eyes of new Coventrians.
The exhibition has attracted people from new communities to the Herbert and there have been many positive comments. In the words of one visitor, 'a wonderful exhibition celebrating welcome and creativity – the best of Coventry'.
City of Sanctuary can been seen in the Herbert's Studio space until 5 February
