Learning Successes

Learning at the Herbert Art Gallery & Museum
Learning at the Herbert Art Gallery & Museum

Last quarter proved to be a real success for the Learning teams across all our sites

Half-term family activities in October 2009, included Creepy Candles at the Priory Visitor Centre where children were able to make candles from scratch with a Halloween theme. The Lunt Roman Fort continues to offer specialist family activities in school holidays and on selected weekends. Recent activities including drum and helmet making were very popular. The Herbert staged, amongst other things, a Merry Making Saturday in late November, as part of a general pre-Christmas craft fair in our covered court area, where children could try their hand at making their own festive decorations.

Keep Calm & Carry On, the Herbert's successful living history project in November, saw children find out about life in Coventry during the Second World War. They met 'Sylvia' from the WVS in LS1 and 'Mr Thompson' (and colleagues) from the ARP in the History Gallery. Children had to take shelter into the transformed Medieval Undercroft as an air raid began. They then had to wait until the all clear was sounded before they could return to the gallery.

The Learning team are currently working in partnership with Brandon Marsh Nature Centre on two areas of learning provision:

  • Developing a joint day out with the Lunt Roman Fort. Comparing the Roman buildings of the Lunt with the newly created Celtic roundhouse at Brandon Marsh
  • Developing a Wildlife Discovery Day whereby students use our natural history collection alongside the  wildlife in the natural world

The Learning and Inclusion teams are also collaborating on a project called Small Worlds, which aims to develop a self-guided early years resource for use in the Herbert galleries
