Visitors to the Herbert Art Gallery & Museum can vote and leave comments about the institution and why they should win at www.artfundprize.org.uk. All comments will be passed onto the judges for their consideration when selecting the short-list and the winner.
It was announced that the Herbert had been long-listed with 10 other museums up and down the country for the award which recognises imagination, originality and excellence. The winning attraction would also receive £100,000 which we would re-invest into maintaining free admission and ensuring the collections are kept safe for generations to come.
Of the nomination, Ludo Keston, Chief Executive of The Herbert said: “The Herbert Art Gallery and Museum is delighted to be considered for this prestigious award. When the Herbert transferred to the operation of the Trust, we hoped to show the people of the City what a fantastic facility they had available to them. Being nominated for awards like the Art Fund Prize is another way that the people of the City can see the way their museum is valued in the wider world. The nomination is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our staff team who work tirelessly to ensure that we bring history and the arts to life in Coventry every day when we open our doors. The visitor's response to our work has been astounding with over 310,000 visitors passing through our doors in the last year alone. We hope to have even better news to announce when the judges of this prestigious award have finished their deliberations later in the year.”
2010 has seen the Herbert Art Gallery & Museum nominated for an array of awards, all of which are a welcomed acknowledgement of all the hard work undertaken by each team since the re-opening in 2008. The gallery and museum has been shortlisted for the Guardian Family Friendly Award for all of its outstanding work with children and families; the MLA has nominated the Herbert for three Best of the West Awards including Best Temporary Exhibition for the Coventry music based exhibition More Than Two Tones; Best Exhibition on a Small Budget for The Hour of Death; and the Innovation Award for the Foxford School Project.
