This exhibition shows work from new communities, exploring the welcome they experienced when they moved to Coventry. Coventry achieved "City of Sanctuary" status in 2011 by building a culture of hospitality for refugees seeking asylum here.
This is a rare chance to see work by artists who have learned their craft in other countries, brought together in their new home, Coventry, creating new work which will give audiences an insight into their city through strangers' eyes. The artists include painters with many years experience and international reputations alongside younger artists exhibiting for the first time.
Holocaust Memorial Day is often marked by coming together to assert what we are against – the ideas and processes that enable genocides to plague our world. The City of Sanctuary movement shows us the opposite, the positive, practical details that make a community welcoming to its new members.
