Exploring Art and Sculpture sessions at The Herbert and the Priory Visitor Centre

These free workshops offer the opportunity to inspire your pupils with The Herbert's diverse collections and exhibitions. Sessions last for 1-2 hours and are suitable for a standard class size.

A child enjoying arts activitiesStunning Shells
Explore the amazing patterns created by Mother Nature in our stunning shell collection. Pupils will handle a variety of shells and learn about their natural history before studying them in more detail and creating a piece of textile art inspired by their favourite shell.
Why not extend your visit and book a Beside the Seaside history session too?

Exhibitions Workshops
These workshops are specially designed to link to our changing exhibition programme, which this year will include Big Moves, Recollect: Drawn On Site and Made in the Middle. Spend some time exploring the gallery before taking part in an art activity inspired by the exhibitions.

A making workshopCreative Collections
Would you like to take part in an art project inspired by our collections? Perhaps you want to study the beautiful patterns on butterfly wings, or would like to take inspiration from period costume? Pupils will have a unique opportunity to spend time studying and drawing objects from our collection, providing an excellent starting point for project work back at school.

Priory Gardens Backpack Trail
Pupils will be given the opportunity to explore the wide range of sculptures in the Priory gardens. They will be encouraged to consider what sculpture is, what it can be made of and why sculptures are placed in public spaces.
This resource is designed to be teacher-led.

Sculpture Backpack Trail
Explore the sculptures around Coventry city centre using our activity trail. Children are provided with a backpack full of resources and ideas for use throughout the route. The trail starts at The Herbert, before moving on to explore a diverse selection of sculptures around the city centre.
This resource is designed to be teacher-led.
Please allow half a day for this activity.

Sculpture Trail extension session
Take the opportunity to extend your visit with a practical workshop back at The Herbert. This could be based on an object that is special to them or a theme chosen by you. Pupils can take inspiration from the stunning sculptures they have seen on the trail to design and create their own mosaic using recycled materials.
