About Priory Visitor Centre

Nearly 1000 years ago, Earl Leofric and his wife Lady Godiva had a church built here. This church was changed into a cathedral that was so huge it could have fitted a football pitch inside. Lots of pilgrims came to pray at the cathedral and the shrines of the saints.

Later on the buildings were sold to a man from London called John Hales. He sold off the beautiful stone and decoration to make money and build houses out of.

For a long time the ruins were buried. A few years ago they were uncovered by archaeologists (Time Team visited twice!)
