Pupils discovering what life was like for Roman soldiers at the Lunt

Visit the Lunt Roman Fort
A visit to The Lunt is a great way of linking in with KS2 Romans, bringing the subject to life for school children. It can also be used to demonstrate why people chose to invade and settle in Britain in the past.

Following in the Footsteps of Soldiers
The Lunt is an excellent example of an early Roman fort and is the only reconstructed fort in Britain. Based on the archaeological evidence on site, the Lunt's imposing wooden gateway and ramparts have been reconstructed creating a glimpse into the history of Roman Britain. Our experienced staff will guide you around the site on a tour designed specifically for school groups. The children can climb the wooden ramparts to the gateway and visit the huge circular wooden gyrus. In the granary, which houses the museum, your pupils will hear about the lives of soldiers at the fort and have the opportunity to handle some of the fascinating finds from the site.

Our teachers resource pack offers suggestions for pre-visit and follow up work as well as educational worksheets for your pupils to use on site. Combining the teachers pack with a visit will ensure children get the most out of their experience. Please allow 2 hours for your visit which can be booked for the morning or afternoon. Full day visits, which will include the tour, can be booked on request.

Children enjoying activities at The LuntNEW! The Complete KS2 Roman Day Out
This partnership project aims to create a Roman day out for KS2 pupils. Activities on the day are closely linked to the National Curriculum addressing chronology, knowledge and understanding of events and people as well as historical enquiry.
The project with Tripontium Gallery at Rugby Art Gallery and Museum was launched in the Spring Term of 2007. If you book a coach for a full day, you will now be able to visit both the Lunt Roman Fort and Tripontium on the same day giving your pupils the opportunity to learn about Roman military and domestic life at two exciting locations.

You can start your day at either site.
A sample day could be:

9.50am Arrive at the Lunt
10.00am - 11.45am Session on military life at the Lunt
11.45am – 12.45am Lunch at the Lunt and travel to Rugby
12.45pm – 2.30pm Session on Roman everyday life in Tripontium Gallery
2.30pm – 3.00pm Travel back to school

Lunt Education  Activities for All Day Sessions
If your school has booked a whole day at the Lunt Fort on Wednesday or Thursday' you can choose one of the following activities to enhance your visit.

Your options will depend on the size of your group, so please contact the Lunt Roman Fort well in advance to discuss your requirements.

  • Mosaic Making - creating a mosaic picture based on Roman patterns
  • Roman Peg People - a craft session based on the observation of Roman costume
  • Collage - an art activity based on Roman design
  • Shield Painting - an art and design activity using the shield designs at the Lunt Fort for inspiration (this activity is only suitable for groups of 30 pupils or less)

Special Schools
Depending on the size of the group and the special needs of the pupils visiting, we can also offer the following as a part of the normal two hour visit.

  • Roman Face Pots– a craft session using air-dry clay to create Roman face pots
  • Sin! Dex! - Make a recording of your pupils marching around the Fort and in the Gyrus (training ring) to take back to your school
  • Braille guidebooks and textured images of the Fort – available for pupils to use on the site for their visit

You are very welcome, and we would encourage you, to contact the Lunt Roman Fort before your visit to discuss the individual needs of your group.

School and Group Bookings

To ensure the service can effectively and efficiently handle your bookings and enquiries at the Lunt Roman Fort, we have launched a new online enquiry service.

In response to customer feedback, we have developed an enquiry form for schools and groups to complete to provide us with key information required to process your booking. Once the enquiry form has been completed it will be sent to a member of staff direct at the Lunt Roman Fort, who will then e-mail you within 48 hours to discuss and confirm your booking.

Once your booking has been confirmed, you will be sent a booking confirmation form to complete and send back to the Lunt Roman Fort.

Our staff are happy to help and advise you during this booking process and can be contacted by e-mail at the Lunt Roman Fort – luntromanfort@coventry.gov.uk
