Partnerships and Projects
Museum learning across the West Midlands
We work with a range of museum partners in the West Midlands, developing
projects for schools and the community.
The
‘Footsteps in Time’ website
http://www.theherbert.org/learning/footstepsintime/
‘Footsteps in Time’ directly supports the delivery of the
Q.C.A. study unit “What was it like to live here in the past?”
and is structured around a trail through the historic heart of Coventry.
It looks in detail at 9 local sites beginning at the University Square
and ending with the Priory Visitor Centre.
This innovative website includes text and images generated by local primary
school children who have worked enthusiastically with historical objects,
paintings and documents from a wide range of sources.
This flexible resource can be used in the classroom either before or
after a visit to any of the featured buildings and there are plenty of
printable activity sheets, fun interactive games and features such as
a useful ‘coin timeline’ and glossary. Log on and download
a trail map, teachers notes and helpful booklists.
George Eliot's Warwickshire
This session is currently only available at Nuneaton Museum and Art
Gallery, due to the building work at The Herbert. This is an interactive
Victorian session. Your pupils will handle museum objects, dress up as
Victorian school children and even write like George Eliot! Please phone
Nuneaton Museum and Art Gallery on (024) 7635 0720 for details on how
to book the sessions.
KS2 The Lunt Roman Fort and Rugby Museum
Roman Partnership Project
From the spring term 2007, look out for our new partnership project
with the Tripontium Gallery at Rugby Museum and Art Gallery. If you have
booked a coach all day, you will be able to visit both the Lunt Fort and
Tripontium in one day so that your pupils will learn all about Roman military
and domestic life at two exciting locations.
BeRibboned
During
the autumn term 2006, Twenty-five Y10 dance students from Cardinal Wiseman
School, Coventry worked with Mercurial Dance to create a series of innovative
contemporary dance performances inspired by The Herbert's nationally important
collection of woven silk ribbons. Their performances formed the basis
of a film installation at the Herbert in January 2007.Dance students used
the history of the silk ribbon industry in Coventry to inspire their creativity
when developing their dance pieces as part of their GCSE coursework. An
important objective of BeRibboned was to give students an opportunity
to use real objects and historical contexts on which to base their work
and to perform with professional dancers. The project clearly achieved
this - all the students created new, original and highly individual dance
routines directly influenced by exposure to museum collections. But perhaps
more significantly, the project succeeded in opening the eyes of young
people to the possibilities of dance.
