History workshops at the Priory Visitor Centre
A visit to the Priory Visitor Centre is the best way to find out about life in
medieval Coventry. The Priory was home to a community of monks for 500 years,
until it was closed down on the orders of King Henry VIII. The site has been
excavated to reveal the remains of Coventry’s first Cathedral and the Priory
Undercrofts.
Medieval Workshops
A Monk’s Life
This session takes place in our atmospheric Priory Undercrofts and provides children
with the opportunity to find out more about life in a monastery in medieval times,
and investigate many fine architectural features. Role-play and costumes are
used to demonstrate what the monks would have worn, what they ate and even how
they could be punished.
Mystery Medieval Objects
Pupils take on the role of archaeologists, and work in pairs or small
groups to explore a range of intriguing ‘finds’. Provided
with an archaeologist's tray and recording form, they will work together
to discover what material the object is made from and what possible
uses it may have had. Be prepared to be surprised!
Priory History Detectives
Discover the secrets of the stones… Observation and recording
skills are put to the test to investigate the fascinating remains of
the Priory and St Mary’s Cathedral housed in the Priory Visitor
Centre with this teacher-led activity.
Make a Medieval Manuscript
A chance for pupils to follow in the footsteps of a monk in the scriptorium
by making their own illuminated manuscripts using quill pens and ink.
