Discovering Science workshops at The Herbert
Our free science workshops are delivered on site in our new education room. Our
science sessions last for between 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours and are appropriate
for a standard class size.
Bones and Skeletons
A fun, hands-on session, where pupils work in small groups to discover
more about what lies beneath our skin. Pupils get the chance to work
with light boxes, a sheep skeleton and a wide variety of other animal
bones as they work their way through a range of interactive challenges
based on our unique collections.
Habitats
A unique chance for pupils to get up close to our natural history collections.
They will study animals from our displays to identify different habitats and
create food chains, as well as look at adaptation. Pupils will also spend time
examining our beetle collection and creating a key to identify it. The workshop
finishes with a handling session, giving pupils a rare opportunity to handle
some of the creatures in our collection.
Rocks
and Minerals
Take part in our Rock Challenge! Pupils work in teams to discover more about
rocks and minerals from our collections. Each team will work through a series
of experiments to complete the challenge, before completing our quiz to find
out how rocks are used everyday. Extend your session to two hours and make a
class display on volcanoes to take back to school with you.
