Portraits inspire teachers

For the latest teachers' Continual Professional Development event a group of local secondary school teachers attended a workshop with the Herbert media team.

After a tour of the Face to Face exhibition and suggestions of ways that portraits could be used as a basis for learning in the classroom, the group used photography to create portraits of each other. For some teachers this was a new opportunity to use DSLR cameras, for others it was a chance to experiment with new techniques. The session also included working with Photoshop; learning to work with layers and masks to create a double exposure and manipulate a portrait.

The teachers left with new ideas and techniques to try back at school and appreciative of the chance to relax and be inspired at the Herbert, describing the event as having a "Good atmosphere and comfortable learning situation especially after a day at school." and  a "Good balance of activities - opportunity to listen / talk / do."

The session was part of the Museums & Schools programme, funded by the DFE through Arts Council and supported by Arts Connect.
