Incorporating History - The North in 100 Archives

Coventry Archives have been involved in Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums' "History of the North in 100 Archives" project. We are excited to announce that one of Coventry's most important historical documents, the Charter of incorporation 20 January 1345, is included in the project.

This document is the "foundation charter" or "charter of incorporation" for the municipal city of Coventry, in whose honour Canley's Charter Avenue was named in 1945. It was written by King Edward II as he stated ‘Given by our hand at Westminster on the twentieth day of January in the eighteenth year of our reign over England but the fifth over France’ This document was establishing a commonalty with cogniscance of pleas, debts and gaol.

To see the Charter of Incorporation and the other 99 items that showcase the history of the North, visit the project website.

You can get the opportunity to see other historical Coventry Archive's collection in person by joining our Treasures of the Archives tour, which takes place on the last Friday of each month. Click here to find out more information.
