From art masterclasses to learn to skate demonstrations, there's plenty for families to enjoy at the Herbert Art Gallery & Museum over the school holidays in summer 2022. Read more about what's coming up on the event pages below!

23 July, 27 August and 17 September | 1.00pm – 3.00pm

Visualise your hopes, dreams and ideas about the future through writing, drawing and collage in this free, drop-in workshop, suitable for all. Participants will be able to use their creativity to contribute to Twenty Years, an interactive installation by Bennett and McDermott.

1 August - 3 September (excluding Sundays) | 10.30am - 3.30pm

From clay sculptures to rainbow rosettes and 3D cityscapes to tie-dye totes, get hands on with our series of daily craft workshops. Sessions are aimed at kids aged 3+, but all are welcome to attend.

2 and 16 August | 10.30am – 1.30pm

Find out how street art can be used to enrich public spaces, sketch out your own designs and contribute to a collaborative mural in this workshop led by local artist Katie-O, aimed at 11-16s.

3 and 24 August 2022 | 10.30am – 1.30pm

Develop your own personal response to art using a hybrid sketchbook and diary using your imagination and the crafting resources available in this workshop led by therapeutic arts and drama practitioner Lindsay Jane Hunter. Aimed at ages 11-16.

4 August | 10.30am – 12.30pm and 2.00pm – 4.00pm

Design and decorate your own ceramic plate or mug under the guidance of an artist in this hands-on workshop, aimed at ages 8-16. Finished pieces will be taken away by the artist for firing and glazing after the session, and will be available to collect on 9 August.

4 and 5 August | 10.30am – 1.30pm

Explore how the hidden stories behind the artworks in our collection can be animated through movement in this workshop from local performing arts company Highly Sprung. What would a painting say if it could speak or look like if it could move? Aimed at ages 11-16.

9 August | 10.30am – 1.30pm

Create your own zine using paper and print ephemera, photo printing, photocopying and printmaking techniques in this workshop for 11-16s. Using the statement, "TELL ME MORE" as a starting point, participants will explore storytelling and identity.

10 August | 10.30am – 1.30pm

Develop your skills in drawing still life objects from observation and create your own oil painting on canvas board to take home in this workshop aimed at 11-16s.

17 August | 10.30am - 1.30pm

Learn to paint flowers from observation including shading, toning and blending techniques in this workshop aimed at 11-16s, led by a local artist.

Art Masterclass: Linocutting

18 August | 10.30am – 12.30pm and 2.00pm – 4.00pm

Use specialist tools and learn the techniques of lino-cutting in this workshop for 8-16s. All materials will be provided, and participants will be able to create their own unique design to take home on the day.

Art Masterclass: Illustration with Jessica Hartshorn

18 and 25 August | 10.30am – 1.30pm

Published illustrator Jessica Hartshorn (Jessi Illustrates) leads this workshop on illustrating comics, books and short stories, covering character development, storyboarding, backgrounds and planning your designs. Aimed at ages 11-16.

19 August | 6.00pm – 8.00pm

Come and hear the tales behind the works that make up the Turner Prize 2021 legacy installation at this free event in our covered court.

22 and 23 August | 2.00pm - 3.30pm

Learn some basic skateboarding skills in these free, drop-in sessions led by Henry Matthews from Project Number 5. Three 20-minute sessions will be filled on a first come, first served basis, but others are welcome to watch along. Aimed at ages 7+.

Learn key knots and simple macrame techniques to create a beautiful wall hanging in this workshop aimed at 8-16s.
