Description

May Day in Coventry, 2022. Sixteen-year-old Leigh has been chosen as May Queen. She’s buzzin’, as is the rest of the city. The cider is flowing and St George’s flag is flying – but during Cov’s festivities, our Queen is inevitably toppled. As the year moves on in the City of Peace and Reconciliation, Leigh must face up to the events of that hot May Day, and dig deep within her past and our city’s history to ask – how did she get here? And how does she get out? Following its acclaimed premiere as part of Paines Plough’s Roundabout in July 2021, May Queen will be re-staged in-the-round in our B2 auditorium this summer.

Venue: Belgrade Theatre

In our landmark building, across the region, the UK and online, we will use theatre to entertain, inspire, share the city’s stories, uncover hidden histories and unleash the creativity in our communities. The Belgrade is the largest professional theatre in Coventry and so we act as both the city and region’s commercial and producing theatre. We are also highly respected for our ground-breaking community and education initiatives. In January 2022 the Belgrade welcomed two new leaders – Laura Elliot as Chief Executive and Corey Campbell as Creative Director.
