Coventry Cathedral Quarter Walking Tour

Broadgate

06 April 2023 to 20 May 2023 (14:00 - 15:30)

Description

Guided walk around Coventry’s Medieval Historic Heart – the Cathedral Quarter, with local Blue Badge Tourist Guide, Verity Tiff. As well as being an ideal introductory walk for those who are visiting Coventry for the first time, this walk is also enjoyed by those who live here. The walk starts in Broadgate by the statue of Lady Godiva and lasts about 1.5 hrs. The walk only covers about 1 mile, focussing on the area around Coventry's 3 cathedrals as we look at its history during the time of Lady Godiva and Earl Leofric, its place as one of the most important medieval cities in England, the evolution of its industries from wool trading, weaving, silk ribbon manufacture, watchmaking and bicycle manufacture to modern car production. From Broadgate we will look at how the city centre, which was once one of the best preserved medieval cities in the country changed during the 1930’s and in the aftermath of the bombing during the Second World War, resulting in one of the first pedestrianised shopping centres in Europe. The exact route may vary depending upon events taking place in the city centre and the interests of the group. The walk is outdoors and we don't go into any of the buildings apart from the cathedral ruins if they are open to the general public.
