Viewings is an exhibition of paintings of figures and interiors from the tv programme Homes Under The Hammer, which focusses on ‘before’ and ‘after’ narratives of property development, and is perhaps symptomatic of the national interest in, or obsession with, property and home ownership.
The estate agents who figure in Homes are engaged in a process of viewing and valuation, based on their knowledge of the property market. Painted for Viewings, removed from the context of the tv programme, they may be readable as viewers of a different, or similar, kind, as gallery-goers perhaps, or curators, or art buyers.
The interiors, painted from or on photos of rooms in the programme, develop the space of the room depicted, in a way analogous to the property development shown in Homes.
In peeling these images off the screen, elaborating on them, presenting them as art, the artist was interested in how that process compares to the development work done on tv. Something like, an investment/calculation within the field of property, and the various socio-economic forces that structure that, to produce a more-or-less calculable pay-off, versus an investment in the field of art, hierarchically structured by various cultural and socio-economic forces, to produce … what ... a feeling of imaginative freedom?
