Lou Blakeway presents a show of recent paintings whose title is an intentional double-entendre exploring the histories and limitations of both the subject of women and painting.
The works offer insight and integrity, as well as psychological and emotional depth, to the genre of figurative art and portraiture, bold and expressive in style yet always questioning with a nuanced, emotional depth.
A primary focus of her work are the forgotten or misrepresented stories of women whose lives were unconventional and at odds with societal expectations. A significant, and perhaps the overlying theme of all her work, is the often wrought and psychologically complex relationship between mother and child. Drawing inspiration from art history, women’s stories and personal experiences, the paintings draw attention to narratives about perceptions and mis-representation.
