Banksy - Fraud or Genius?

Everybody has heard of Banksy, but how much do you know about him or his work?

This entertaining illustrated lecture by expert Pepe Martinez will trace the story of Banksy’s humble beginnings to become one of the most recognisable names in the art world and assess his influence on it.

This free ‘taster’ lecture is the inaugural event of the new Arts Society Coventry branch, where Coventry people of all ages with an interest in the Arts are welcome to come and find out what the Society, an educational charity with the objective of promoting interest in the Arts, will add to the Coventry scene. Every month a world-class lecturer with expertise different areas of the Arts, from renaissance painting to contemporary art and technology, will introduce us to new ideas and ways of seeing. Members of the audience will be able to join other local arts enthusiasts to discuss the issues over a glass of wine or soft drink.

In this first event, Arts Society lecturer Pepe Martinez will trace the story of Banksy’s humble beginnings as a tagger on the streets of Bristol in the 1980s to one of the most recognisable names in the art world. It examines the reasons for behind his incredible rise, looking at some of his famous stunts and discuss what his influence has been on the art market today and what his legacy, if anything, might be.
