Remembering the Blitz

We are sharing some simple and stunning craft activities for the 80th anniversary of the Blitz, you can join in to keep your children entertained in a creative way. The ideas will always aim to use items you are likely to have at home, and where possible using resources from your recycling bin.

Poppy Apple Print

Resources required:

  • One apple
  • Red paint (but vary this to work with whatever you have at home)
  • Large piece of paper/card/or use card from a cereal box
  • Green paper/card (get creative and use old magazines and hunt for pages with lots of green)
  • Glue
  • Scissors

Instructions:

  • Rip or cut green paper to make stems for the poppies
  • Glue the green stems to the large paper
  • Cut the apple in half to make a poppy-like shape (under adult supervision)
  • Dip one half of the apple into the paint and print along the tops of the green stems
  • Let dry and enjoy looking at your beautiful row of poppies

Poppy Cup Cases

Resources required:

  • Red cup cases (if you don’t have red ones, perhaps use a red felt tip/red crayon to make them into red ones)
  • Glue
  • Large piece of paper/card/or use card from a cereal box
  • Green paint (but vary this to work with whatever you have at home)
  • Small paint brush
  • Ice cream sticks

Instructions:

  • Paint the ice-cream sticks with green paint to make stems for the poppies and set aside to dry
  • Once dry, glue the green stems to the large paper
  • Then glue the red cup cases along the green stems (you can glue a second cup case into each one to create a more floral effect)
  • Add a few black dots in the centre of the cup cases using a felt tip/crayon to make the black stamens
  • Let dry and enjoy looking at your beautiful upcycled poppy art
