Year 6 Transition Summer Project  – Arts Award at Home

Are you looking to support year 6 pupils with meaningful transition activity as they prepare to move up to secondary school in September?

Herbert Art Gallery & Museum are able to support you with the Arts Award at Home programme, with further opportunities to take part in facilitated workshops and activities across the school summer holidays.

We have had great success with our Arts Award at Home programme throughout the lockdowns of 2020 and 2021. Children have participated in home-based projects to achieve their Arts Award Discover levels, and we are continuing to support this after positive feedback from participants and their parents. It is an opportunity to encourage pupils to explore various art forms and visit cultural venues, particularly during the school holidays, which will bridge the gap of cultural learning after the prolonged museum closures.

Following on from consultation with a local secondary school we are now offering the Arts Award at Home programme as a transition project for pupils across the summer holidays. Pupils will be encouraged to participate over the 6-week holiday, completing independent research and creative activities, whilst being guided through each step required for the Arts Award Discover using our activity pack, available here.

At the end of the summer holidays, pupils are invited to submit their completed Arts Award projects to their school, with the work being moderated by the Herbert's Learning Team and submitted to Trinity College London. All successful participants will receive a certificate from Trinity College London, which can be presented at school as part of a celebration assembly if desired. Furthermore, we can support your transition activities and the Arts Award projects with facilitated workshops during the summer holidays as part of pre-arranged visits to the museum for your pupils.

Costs: It costs £7 per pupil to take part in the Arts Award Discover, which covers the costs of moderation, certificates and postage. If your school has higher than 10% pupil premium, we can fund your pupils participation in the Arts Award at Home programme thanks to funding from the Museums & Schools Programme from Arts Council England and the DfE. Please note this funding is available on a first come, first served basis, whilst funding lasts.

To add facilitated workshops to your transition activity during the school summer holidays, these are charged at our normal school visit rates, which can be found here.

Additional ways we an support this transition project: We can provide you with information about our summer holiday programming for families to make parents aware of what they can get involved with in our venues over the 6-week period. We can also visit your school, should you host any transition information evenings for parents, to share further information about the Arts Award at Home programme.
