Herbert Illuminations: Popcorn to Rock 'N' Roll
Hear the story of Reg Calvert. The life and death of a radio pirate is explored by his daughter, S.K. Moore in her book trilogy about an event that would change the face of British broadcasting.

(Dorothy Calvert with glitter ball made in the lounge. 1957)
Book One: In 1946 postwar Britain, Reg and Dorothy Calvert, fell in love and married aged just 18. They wanted a better life than their parents but with a massive housing crisis, no job and no home, Reg bought an old bus and converted it into a caravan and for three years they lived in an apple orchard. They struggled to survive and Reg did many things to earn a living, including playing piano in a club, hairdressing, making popcorn and selling it on the markets and becoming a radio and television engineer. When Reg heard Bill Haley's 'Rock Around the Clock', he had a new dream, to bring Rock 'n' Roll to England. (And he did). He became like the Pied Piper as young boys who could sing or play guitar, gave up their jobs and apprenticeships to follow him and join his 'School of Rock'.
Book Two: Reg and Dorothy moved to Clifton Hall near Rugby in 1961. The musicians and singers move in with them and even the Beatles visit this amazing house.
Book Three: 1964 Reg had a new dream, to have a 'pirate' radio station. 1966, he was shot dead by a rival. This became the catalyst that changed the face of British broadcasting.
